Breaking your budget isn't necessary when you decorate your home. But, with or without a budget, most of us are pretty clueless about where to start. A general idea of what we like and don't like is what we may have but it's not an easy task to turn those ideas into a reality. There are so many styles to choose from so it's not surprising that we find it hard to get started.

The best way to start on your decorating project is to decide where you are now (decorating-wise) and what needs that you and your family have that must be incorporated. Are there small children that can be injured if they fall on a table's sharp corners? Or you may have pets that will ruin your white sofa.

Will you be decorating the entire house or only one room? You will need to decide if you want all of the rooms of your home to be decorated in the same style. After making that decision, you can then start to plan your first room.

The interior design process begins with a plan. By looking at home design websites or design magazines, you will be able to find pictures of rooms that catch your eye. Why were you attracted to them? Is there a common theme? You will find your own personal design style with the help of these questions. You will probably find that you are especially drawn to certain styles and find some designs that you downright hate!

Think about what activities will be done in the room. There may only be one activity or there may be more than one. There will be furnishings that each activity will require and this is what you need to find out. For example, in a sitting area, you need to include some chairs while in an office area, you need to place a desk.

Deciding on your budget is important. Find out how much you can afford to spend on paint, furniture, flooring, and accessories. Spend your money on furnishings that are well-built and will get the hardest usage. Remember that a room doesn't have to be completed all at once if your budget doesn't allow it. Some of the best designs develop over time.

When decorating your home, keep in mind that personality is what will keep your rooms alive. Even a sleek and modern style doesn't have to sterile and cold because it can have personality.

Interior decorating should first incorporate the practicalities such as budget, space planning and special family needs. Then, worry about the ambiance and style of your rooms.

Planning your decorating project will help keep it within budget and the final result will be worth the initial effort it took to plan it.
